Welcome to Heal Yourself, Change Your Life. My name is Brandy Gillmore, and after recovering from my own life-changing injury, it has become my mission to share with others the same discoveries I made that changed my health—and my entire life. Our minds are truly incredible. The placebo is proof of this.
Each week, I will take this simple awareness to a whole new level. I will even coach live callers to free themselves of physical pain using only their mind. And then I’ll provide you with a combination of practical and spiritual insights that you can use to master your mind, your emotions, and your energy—to help you heal your health, yourself, and your life. Let’s begin.
Hello and welcome to this week’s Quick IQ episode, where we talk about insights and questions. Today there is a very powerful insight that I want you to pay attention to—something that will be key for everyone moving forward. I want you to take this warning with great awareness. It’s not meant to put you in fear at all, but rather to help you stay conscious and protected as we move forward with mindfulness, technology, and all that’s evolving in our world.
So, I want you to protect your brain from the things that are coming with technology. I’ve already seen this happening with some people, and even if it’s not happening to you personally yet, chances are this situation will arise. If you are someone who is into mindfulness and understanding your mind, then as technology continues to advance, it’s likely that this will come your way and begin to impact a lot of people.
For that reason, I just want to warn you—not to create fear, but awareness. Remember, knowledge is power. So, as we go into this topic, it’s really going to help you stay mindful of how your brain works and what’s influencing it.
If you think about our past few episodes, we’ve been talking about things that people do that can unintentionally “mess up” their minds and create problems. These insights always seem to arrive with divine timing. We get the most wonderful volunteers, and when I work with them, I never know in advance what topic will emerge. My team simply accepts whoever volunteers, and whatever message comes through becomes the theme of that session—and often, it’s exactly what we all need to hear in that moment.
That’s what I love about this work. Every volunteer brings a powerful message that helps create a shift in the now—or sometimes, a warning of what’s to come. And that’s exactly what today’s episode is about. As we wrap up, it will serve as both a message for the present and something to stay aware of moving forward.
To begin unpacking this topic—because it is a bit complex—let’s simplify things and start with a quick foundational understanding of how the mind can influence the physical body.
Many times on this podcast, we talk about using emotions and emotional energy to heal the body. But we also need to understand that if we, as human beings, force enough thought over the body—combined with emotion—we can also create changes that aren’t necessarily good for our health.
For example, we’ve seen in past episodes where someone denies their pain and repeatedly tells themselves, “It’s not real, it’s not real.” In doing so, they’re trying to convince their brain to stop processing pain signals. And amazingly, it can work—at least temporarily. The mind can influence the body with that level of forced thought and emotion. The pain may disappear in that specific area, but as we’ve seen, it often resurfaces somewhere else or manifests in a new way. It’s a kind of backfire.
This shows us that there are ways we can use our minds to influence the body that aren’t necessarily healthy—but the body still responds.
Let me share an example that really illustrates this point. There was a woman who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She was also a hypnotherapist, so naturally, she decided to use hypnosis to try to heal her body. What she began doing was hypnotizing herself—over and over again—commanding her body to “create more insulin.”
She did this so often and with so much emotional intensity that eventually, her body listened. Her body started creating even more insulin. But then—it backfired in a huge way.
With type 2 diabetes, the problem isn’t that the body doesn’t produce enough insulin. The issue is insulin resistance—meaning the body is already making insulin, but the cells aren’t responding to it properly. So when her body began producing even more insulin, it caused a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels, leading to major health complications. She had to seek medical help right away.
Thankfully, it was temporary—her blood sugar eventually rebalanced—but it was a serious wake-up call. And she wasn’t the only one. I’ve heard of multiple hypnotherapists trying this exact same thing, with the same result.
Now, this particular story might not apply to you directly, but there’s a bigger takeaway here: when we command the brain or body forcefully enough, it can respond—but not always in the way we want. It’s a reminder that we must be conscious of the kind of mental and emotional programming we’re reinforcing.
Interestingly, about a year and a half ago, a research study found a correlation between type 2 diabetes and the emotion of loneliness. Now, when I work with clients who have diabetes, loneliness is often part of it—but there are usually several emotional factors underneath. Still, it’s powerful to see that even traditional medical research is starting to recognize emotional roots in physical illness.
I’ll make sure to link that study in the show notes for those who want to explore it further. But the key takeaway here is that emotional and energetic factors are always involved, and if we overlook them, we can end up trying to “force” the body into something that backfires instead of heals.
So why am I sharing this story today? Because it helps us understand how thought and emotion can create both healing and harm—and that awareness is going to become even more critical as we move into a world increasingly shaped by technology and neurofeedback tools.
I’m already seeing more and more people experimenting with ways to measure their brain activity—using headbands, EEG devices, and apps that track “mindfulness” or “brain states.” And while that might sound exciting or empowering, there’s a growing trend that concerns me deeply.
People are starting to link the idea of “being spiritual” or “mindful” with having less brain activity. They hear things like “quiet the mind,” and interpret that literally as “turn off the brain.”
And I just want to say this as clearly as possible: it’s not about having less brain activity. It’s about having the right kind of activity—balanced, connected, healthy brain function that supports your wellbeing and awareness.
If you’ve ever heard of the default mode network, you know that it refers to brain activity when someone is awake but not engaged in a specific task—essentially, when the mind is wandering. Researchers have found that people who meditate tend to have less brain activity during this default mode, which has been interpreted as a sign of mental calmness.
However, I want to be clear: while this can be interesting to study, it’s also a very narrow way to understand what’s actually happening. It’s not about “less activity equals more spiritual” or “less activity equals better.” The goal isn’t to suppress brain function—it’s to have balanced, integrated activity that reflects health and harmony.
Intelligent, self-aware people often have different regions of the brain communicating more effectively. There’s more connection and coordination happening—not less. That’s why I encourage you to be cautious about the message that “less brain activity” is somehow ideal. Because if that belief becomes wired into your subconscious, it can lead to very real, unintended consequences.
I see this all the time—people link certain beliefs or behaviors to being “more spiritual,” and it ends up backfiring in their lives. Let’s look at a few common examples.
Some people believe that being alone or living in solitude is the most spiritual path. But if that belief becomes embedded in the subconscious, it can sabotage their relationships and ability to connect with others. They may consciously want friendship and community, but their subconscious programming tells them solitude is more spiritual—so they unintentionally push people away.
Yet love and connection are essential for our wellbeing. Just like a plant needs sunlight, we need love to thrive. Even science shows that infants who don’t receive enough affection can fail to thrive or even die. So, solitude as a constant state isn’t the spiritual ideal—it’s imbalance.
Another belief I often encounter is that “money is not spiritual.” People with this mindset may unconsciously reject financial abundance, even though they’re stressed about bills or struggling to make ends meet. This creates constant tension between their spiritual and physical realities.
But money is simply energy—neither good nor bad. It can be used to help, to serve, and to create. And many deeply spiritual people—like the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, and Oprah Winfrey—have financial abundance. So, it’s not about rejecting money; it’s about keeping a healthy, balanced relationship with it.
Then there’s the belief that it’s more spiritual to manifest without taking action—that if you’re truly evolved, everything will just appear effortlessly. While yes, energy and mindset are incredibly powerful, life also asks us to engage, move, and act. Taking action is not unspiritual—it’s how we participate in creation.
Look at people like Oprah or Gandhi—they manifested their dreams, but they also took inspired action. Even Elon Musk has spent decades actively pursuing his dream of space travel. Manifestation works hand in hand with action; it’s a dance between thought, energy, and movement.
Unfortunately, some modern teachings and marketing around spirituality focus on “effortless manifesting” without understanding how the mind really works. This can make people feel paralyzed or overwhelmed, unable to take even small steps forward. When you remove action, you remove momentum—and that can make life feel stagnant and frustrating.
Now, let’s bring this back to the topic of brain activity. A growing number of people are linking the idea of spiritual advancement or enlightenment with having less brain activity. And this belief can become deeply ingrained in the subconscious, especially as people use neurofeedback tools or brain-measuring apps that “reward” them for lower readings.
To researchers, this is just data—but to someone on a spiritual path, that data can feel like a badge of progress, a sign of being more evolved. It’s easy to become emotionally attached to those readings and start striving for lower and lower numbers. But remember what we talked about earlier: the mind can actually make that happen. It can force the brain to slow down or shut off activity. And when that happens over time, it can lead to mental fog, emotional numbness, or difficulty functioning.
What started as a pursuit of calmness can become a suppression of vitality. And when that happens, everything—motivation, energy, joy, and clarity—can begin to fade.
So, please, if you’re exploring these tools or technologies, do so with awareness. You don’t want to “train” your brain to be less alive. You want it to be vibrant, connected, and balanced.
When people share their “success” with brainwave readings—talking about how calm or low their activity is—they often receive positive feedback or admiration. That praise becomes emotional reinforcement. The subconscious then begins linking that state of “less activity” with feelings of pride, love, or validation, which strengthens the pattern even more.
That’s why this kind of programming can be hard to shift. It’s not just data—it’s emotionally charged. And when emotion gets involved, the subconscious listens. This is the same mechanism that makes affirmations or visualization work in healing—it’s the emotional intensity behind the thought that programs the mind.
So again, I want to encourage awareness. Your goal is not to have less brain activity—it’s to have the right kind of activity that supports a joyful, inspired, and healthy life.
Instead of focusing on brainwave numbers or meditation scores, focus on your real results—your happiness, your relationships, your creativity, your health. Are you waking up with joy? Do you feel love and connection? Is your body responding with vitality? Those are the real metrics that matter.
The truth is, your life and body are the best indicators of your inner state. So measure your success not by how “quiet” your brain looks on a chart, but by how alive and fulfilled you feel each day.
And if you find that small, everyday tasks are starting to feel overwhelming, or if your motivation seems to be slipping, that could be a sign that something in your subconscious programming has gone off track. It’s not about blame—it’s just an invitation to bring more balance and vitality back into your energy.
As technology continues to advance, this is something you’ll want to pay close attention to. More and more apps and tools are being developed that interact directly with the brain—tracking, stimulating, or attempting to “optimize” it. While some of this technology can be helpful, a lot of it is being commercialized by people who don’t truly understand how the mind works or how deep its programming goes.
We are entering a time when it’s going to be more important than ever to protect your brain and to be mindful of what you allow to influence it. Even things that sound harmless—like meditation apps or neurofeedback games—can have unintended effects if used without awareness. Remember, throughout history, there have been things that seemed normal or even beneficial at the time—like doctors endorsing cigarettes, or asbestos being used in homes—that we later realized were harmful. Let’s learn from that and stay conscious now.
When I’ve worked with people with Alzheimer’s or cognitive decline, what I often find is that the way they’ve been using their brains over time hasn’t been healthy. The brain needs engagement, stimulation, joy, and connection—it thrives on energy and purpose. So as we step into this new age of mental technology, it’s vital to be discerning and aware of what’s influencing your mind.
Mindfulness and meditation are being commercialized like never before. Many people see it as a business opportunity rather than a sacred practice. They create meditations or “healing frequencies” without truly understanding the deeper workings of the subconscious mind. But the mind is powerful—its programming impacts everything: motivation, perception, health, and even love.
I’ve spent nearly two decades researching and working with the mind, and even after healing myself, it took years before I began teaching others—because I wanted to make sure that I could consistently help people achieve the same results. This work requires care, depth, and understanding. It’s not something to take lightly.
That’s why I always encourage people: be careful who you let into your mind. Be mindful of the meditations you listen to, the affirmations you repeat, and the technologies you use. Always check in with how you feel and whether what you’re using is truly uplifting your energy—or dulling it.
So what can you do? Start by protecting your brain and being intentional about what you feed it—mentally, emotionally, and energetically. Avoid tools that encourage “less brain activity” or that give you negative feedback about being “too alert.” Instead, do things that engage your mind in healthy ways.
Here are a few simple suggestions:
These simple actions keep your brain sharp, vibrant, and connected. They help balance both your mental and physical energy.
One of my favorite practices is to go for a walk and be 100% present—no thinking about the past or future, no planning, just awareness. I notice the flowers, the trees, the beauty of nature. I allow myself to feel completely in the now. The more I do this, the better it feels—peaceful, grounded, and even euphoric.
If you’re someone who tends to live in your head or spend a lot of time meditating, I encourage you to balance that by consciously grounding yourself in the physical world. Be present. Feel. Move. Engage. It’s one of the healthiest things you can do for your mind and your energy.
I know that for some people, this idea of being fully present might sound boring or uninteresting at first—especially if you’re used to “checking out” into meditation or thought. But please trust me when I say that presence can feel amazing once you connect with it. It’s energizing. It’s real. It keeps your mind strong and alive.
So as you finish listening to this episode, I invite you to take a few minutes for yourself—go outside, take a walk, or just sit quietly and notice the world around you. Give your brain the nourishment of presence.
And please, share this episode with someone you love—or even someone you don’t! The more people who understand how powerful and precious the mind really is, the more we can collectively uplift our world. Imagine what would happen if everyone became more conscious, more present, and more empowered to use their mind and energy for healing and creation. That’s how we change the world together.
I love that you are here, expanding your mind, your energy, and your awareness. You are amazing. And I look forward to connecting with you on the next episode.
