Hello, and welcome to this week’s quick IQ episode, where we talk about insights and questions. And today we have a really great question regarding the topic of menopause. One listener writes in and says:
“I’ve been watching women struggle with menopause, and they seem to expect it to be difficult and sad and hard. I’m not there yet, but it’s got me thinking about patterns and belief and Brandy’s work. I’m wondering — is it really as bad as people say, or is it just because they believe it’s going to be that way?
Brandy, this is just a question for the podcast, because here in England they’re even doing courses for men in the workplace to support women during this difficult phase of menopause.”
Understanding the Mind–Body Connection During Menopause
All right, so let’s go ahead and unpack this — and I love this question, because all too often we’re told we’re powerless when it comes to our health. But the truth is, our minds, emotions, and mindset can significantly impact our hormones.
Even in a normal menstrual cycle, stress can cause major changes. If a woman goes through a period of high stress, she might skip a cycle or even several months. That was something I experienced during my injury — I missed my cycle for quite a while. It’s a clear demonstration of how much our minds can affect our hormones.
And it’s not just about estrogen or progesterone. Think about how love and connection increase oxytocin, or how stress raises cortisol. Our emotional state can shift our entire biochemical balance. So yes, our mindset deeply affects our hormones and health.
The Role of the Adrenal Glands and Stress
Now, when it comes to menopause specifically, here’s what happens physiologically: throughout life, the ovaries help produce estrogen and progesterone — along with the adrenal glands. Once a woman reaches menopause, the ovaries stop producing as much estrogen and progesterone, and the adrenal glands take on more of that responsibility.
That means stress plays an even bigger role, because the adrenals are now carrying the hormonal load. If a woman is under constant stress, those glands can become overtaxed, creating more imbalance and intensifying menopausal symptoms.
The Connection Between Cholesterol and Hormones
And here’s another fascinating piece that many people don’t realize: cholesterol helps form hormones like progesterone and testosterone. Sometimes people have high cholesterol but low hormones — because their body isn’t properly converting cholesterol into the hormones it needs.
So, when traditional medicine just focuses on lowering cholesterol without addressing the conversion issue, it’s like having a refrigerator full of food and throwing it out because there’s nothing on the dinner table. The problem isn’t too much food — it’s that it’s not being used properly.
In this way, we can see that our hormonal balance involves more than just biology — it’s deeply influenced by stress, emotions, and mindset.
How Stress and Emotions Impact Hormones
When we step back and look at the bigger picture, it becomes clear: stress impacts hormones in a major way. And this is something I see not only in menopause but in many other health conditions as well.
In every podcast episode where I work with a volunteer to release pain or address health issues, we identify the specific emotional stress or subconscious pattern that’s contributing to their imbalance. The same principle applies here — hormonal balance can often be improved by identifying and transforming those deeper emotional and mental stressors.
Real-Life Experiences with Hormonal Imbalance
I’ve worked with women who have experienced severe depression or even suicidal thoughts because of hormonal imbalance. And I’ve also seen people on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy who still struggle with irritability, sadness, or emotional instability.
When hormones are off, our emotions can feel unpredictable. But the encouraging truth is that this doesn’t mean you’re stuck — it means that by transforming the underlying stress patterns, you can help your body return to balance.
Even with my own healing journey, my injury was linked to subconscious fear. That fear amplified when I got hurt, creating frustration, pain, and emotional distress. For a long time, I just tried to calm myself and manage it — until I discovered how to truly transform the emotions and energy behind it. That discovery led me to heal myself and create the methods I teach today.
Breaking the Cycle of Stress and Hormonal Imbalance
If you’re currently struggling with hormonal imbalance, stress, or mood swings, please know this: you are not powerless. It can feel like a vicious cycle — feeling emotional, frustrated, or depressed, which then further affects your hormones. But you can change that cycle.
