Quick IQ Episode: Anti-Aging, Youthing, and Reprogramming Your Mind for Healing
Welcome to Heal Yourself, Change Your Life. My name is Brandy Gillmore, and after recovering from my own life-changing injury, it’s become my mission to share with others the same discoveries I made that changed my health and my entire life. Our minds are truly incredible — the placebo is proof of this.
Each week, I’ll take this simple awareness to a whole new level. I’ll even coach live callers to free themselves of physical pain using only their minds. Then I’ll provide you with a combination of practical and spiritual insights that you can use to master your mind, your emotions, and your energy — to help you heal your health, yourself, and your life.
Let’s begin.
Understanding How the Mind Influences Aging and Healing
Hello, and welcome to this week’s Quick IQ episode, where we talk about insights and questions. Today, I want to talk about a fascinating topic — anti-aging and “youthing” — and how our thoughts and beliefs can either support healing or block it.
All the time, when you see me working with people on the podcast, I’m showing them how to use their mind to release pain, create radical emotional shifts, and bring about deep transformation. But what I also see — quite often — are unconscious ways that people accidentally reinforce negativity or illness in their minds without realizing it.
It’s something I’ve observed again and again: people genuinely working on healing or feeling more youthful, but at the same time, unknowingly programming their minds in a way that keeps them stuck. And it’s not their fault — it’s a pattern that many of us have absorbed from our culture and conditioning.
How “Medical Student’s Disease” Reveals the Power of the Mind
Let’s start with a simple but powerful example — something known as Medical Student’s Disease. This is a well-documented condition where medical students, while studying various illnesses, start to believe they’re developing the symptoms of those very diseases. As they read and research, they begin to imagine or feel as though they’re actually sick.
Now, what happens? Their minds become filled with images of illness and fear. That fear can then trigger physical sensations, anxiety, or even mimic symptoms. It’s a reminder that what we focus on — especially emotionally — affects both our perception and our physiology.
So imagine if someone stayed in that mindset for years — continually focusing on symptoms, fear, and illness. That energy would reinforce negativity in the subconscious mind and keep the body in a stressed state, blocking healing from taking place.
How the Mind Reinforces Negativity Without Realizing It
Many people do this unknowingly. For instance, when someone receives a diagnosis, they often research it in-depth — reading about every symptom, every possible outcome, every “what if.” And while knowledge is important, repetition of fear-based thoughts can actually reinforce illness at the subconscious level.
That’s why when I work with volunteers on the podcast, you might notice that if someone starts describing their symptoms in great detail, I often interrupt them — not to be rude, but to protect their mind from reinforcing the negative programming. The more we dwell on pain or symptoms, the more we feed subconscious stress and overwhelm, which makes true healing more difficult.
Your Beliefs About Aging Matter
Now, let’s apply this to something even more universal — aging. I want to invite you to ask yourself: What are your beliefs and emotions around aging?
When you see a new wrinkle or a gray hair, do you think, “Oh no, I’m getting old, I’m slowing down, I’m falling apart”? Or do you feel inspired, vibrant, and grateful for the wisdom and strength that comes with each year?
Because here’s the truth — your beliefs about aging shape your experience of it. If your subconscious mind holds fearful images of aging — decline, sickness, weakness — it will begin to mirror those beliefs in your body and energy. But if you associate aging with vibrancy, wisdom, and empowerment, your mind and body will respond accordingly.
Reframing Aging: The Power of Positive Labels
I want to share a beautiful example from my friend Arielle Ford, who recently gave a TEDx talk introducing the idea of the “QueenAger.” I absolutely love this concept. It reframes aging as something powerful, radiant, and alive — a time to come more fully into your power and authenticity.
I’ll include a link to her talk in the show notes — it’s only nine minutes, but it’s wonderful. What I love most is that it gives a new label to aging — one that uplifts rather than diminishes. In contrast, our culture has become filled with negative labels — “the narcissist,” “the abuser,” “the victim,” “the old person.” These kinds of labels unconsciously reinforce limitation and negativity to the mind.
When we shift the label — when we say “QueenAger” instead of “aging woman” — we literally change the vibration of how we see ourselves and what the mind mirrors back to us.
Awareness for Healing and Youthing
So whether you’re working on healing your body, or cultivating youthful vitality, I want to invite you to become aware of the messages you’re feeding your mind about illness and aging.
Remember, even medical students — highly educated, intelligent people — can fall into the trap of mentally rehearsing illness and unintentionally creating stress responses in their bodies. So imagine what happens when someone repeatedly focuses on the symptoms of a diagnosis, year after year. The mind becomes conditioned to expect and reproduce those symptoms.
That’s why I always emphasize: of course, continue seeing your doctors and educating yourself — but balance that with uplifting, healing-focused energy. You want to train your subconscious mind to expect wellness, youthfulness, and vitality.
If you’ve been reading or thinking about symptoms constantly, gently pivot. Ask yourself: What would it look like to focus more on my health than my illness? To focus more on my vitality than my age?
Shift Your Subconscious Expectations
Your subconscious mind listens to every emotion, thought, and image you give it. So start feeding it new ones — images of strength, vitality, and youth. See yourself as radiant, confident, and full of energy. And use empowering language — not “I’m getting old,” but “I’m growing stronger,” “I’m becoming wiser,” “I’m more alive than ever.”
This simple but powerful shift in consciousness can open the door to profound transformation — physically, emotionally, and energetically.
