Surrender can be a well-known recommendation in healing and spirituality.
But do you really need to surrender to heal?
After so many people were surprised by last week’s episode about gratitude, Brandy wanted to explore another healing concept that sounds beautiful on the surface—but may affect the mind very differently depending on what is happening underneath.
For some people, surrender may feel peaceful, freeing, and supportive.
But for others, the same idea may create a very different emotional response—especially when they are already struggling with fear, uncertainty, health challenges, or feeling powerless in their life.
And that raises an important question:
What is surrender actually creating within you?
In this episode, you’ll discover:
• Why surrender can keep you stuck
• What may happen when a healing concept creates an unexpected emotional response
• Why highly driven people can sometimes become internally conflicted around surrender
• How a seemingly peaceful idea can create a very different experience beneath the surface
• Why it is important to question even well-known healing concepts and notice how they are affecting your mind
• What to consider before assuming surrender is always the answer
This is not about saying surrender is always bad.
It is about understanding what is actually happening inside your mind when you use it.
Because something can sound peaceful, spiritual, and healing on the surface—and still create a very different internal experience.
And sometimes, understanding that distinction can completely change the way you approach healing and transformation.

Welcome to Heal Yourself. Change Your Life. I’m Brandy Gillmore, and what I’m most known for is helping people to create radical transformations, and even demonstrating the power of the mind and self-healing under medical equipment so you can see the results. And my work has even been published in a medical journal because it’s truly incredible what we are all capable of when we understand our own minds at a deeper level.
So whether you’re new to this work or you’ve been studying the power of the mind for many years, I love that you are here. I love that we’re on this incredible journey together, and I look forward to sharing breakthrough information with you. That said, on this podcast, I’ll share two types of episodes.
First, self-healing episodes where I share key insights from working with live volunteers. And the second type are where I answer questions from the audience. That said, if you’d like to volunteer or submit a question, come visit me at BrandyGillmore.com. On that note, let’s dive in
So many people were mind blown from last week’s episode where we talked about the topic of gratitude and how it can actually keep you very stuck from healing yourself and for transforming. And part of the reason that so many people were mind blown is because it made logical sense. They could see the awareness.
And so today I want to build on that with a different concept that I see all of the time where it sounds good on the surface and yet can keep people really stuck. And of course, I’m not just going to tell you about it. I want to share with you so you can think about it for yourself so it makes sense to you.
And here we go. So it has to do with the topic of surrender. Now, if we take healing for a moment and we think about the mind body connection, you know, we can simplify it and we can think about just simple emotions for a moment because we can see the mind body connection all around us. You know, if somebody’s embarrassed, their face can turn red, or somebody can have panic or an anxiety attack, or somebody can have a nervous stomach.
So we, we can see on a very simple note, we can see the mind body connection. Or if we think about somebody who feels lonely. You know, medical research has even shown that loneliness can increase type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart attack, and of course, heart disease is a leading cause of death. And so we can see different emotions can affect the body in a very real way.
Now, let’s say somebody is feeling lonely and it is impacting their health, and this is something that I’ve seen all the time. They’re feeling disconnected, unloved, hurt. And if I said to that person, “Just surrender.” Do you think that that’s good advice? Do you think that would help them? Okay, so I can tell you from my own experience, both working with people and in my own life, that I’ve seen people who have tried surrendering and it didn’t go well.
It really backfired in a big way. Now, me personally, when I was going through my injury, it took a lot of effort for me to really, really surrender, ’cause I heard, okay, I was, I was willing to do anything to just heal. And so I read all the information, of course, that was, you know, 20 years ago now, about surrender, and you- it was important to surrender.
So I did, and I ended up in one of the deepest depressions I had ever been in. Why? Because I felt defeated, because I surrendered, and then I felt hopeless. Like I’m just waiting and hope- it like, it, it, fear and stress and, and defeat and it just, it, it didn’t go well. So it’s a bad plan, and I had to get myself out of that.
And so, a food for thought, because so often I see people who are doing this. Now, this is the tricky part, is I also see a lot of people who are, of course, very driven people. Because a lot of times somebody’s really looking outside of the box for healing. There’s a, there’s, there’s somebody who’s willing to be motivated, who’s really wanting a better life to heal and all of that.
So, so what I’ll see all of the time is this, is I’ll see people who are driven, who are motivated, who really want to heal themselves, change their life, and they really want to do that, and then they’re bringing in feelings of surrender And then what ends up happening is they end up even more conflicted because they’re also feeling they need to surrender or even feeling like it’s bad to want anything for themselves, and they should just surrender.
And so it’s literally, it’s like trying to drive a car with one foot on the gas pedal and one foot on the brake pedal, or trying to drive a car with no energy or no fuel at all, you know, or no power, no electricity, whatever it is, at all. And so, so often I see people who get stuck for this very reason.
And so just food for thought. I want to invite you to look at this because if you ask me over the years, the last 20 years, how many times I have seen people who go into a state of surrender in trying to heal and end up more stressed, more fearful, more stuck, uh, all of the time. And, um, it- as l- last week was the last time.
I mean, all of the time I see that. And so a- again, I want to invite you to think about it for yourself. And, and that’s really the insight. You know, even if you think about the episode I did last week on gratitude, I shared with you in that episode that part of what made me really start looking outside of the box is I started realizing that a lot of things that were being said that sounded good weren’t all that accurate.
And, and even, you know, I, I shared last week the open label placebo. What… And really quickly, if you haven’t heard of it, uh, basically if you’ve heard of the placebo, which is a fake treatment. So, and it’s well known that somebody can take a placebo, a fake treatment, and they can experience some type of results.
And so I had heard, you know, over and over people said, “You just have to believe. Believe. The placebo works because of belief. Healing works because of belief.” And so I said, “Okay. Well, okay, let me just believe, believe, believe.” But then I found there’s something called the open label placebo, which is exactly like it sounds.
It is open label. Both the doctor and the patient both know it’s fake, and it still works And there’s no belief needed in it. And I said, “Wait a second, there’s something else.” And so point being is just that a lot of things aren’t necessarily what they seem. And so what we’re living in is a world where more and more people are waking up to the incredible awareness that we can heal ourselves, that our minds are truly amazing.
And so more and more people are waking up to this awareness, but the problem is, is there’s more and more and more conflicting information or information that doesn’t exactly make logical sense. And so what happens is so often some more people are waking up, but then they’re also getting more and more stuck.
And so just food for thought, and the insight that I want to share is exactly that, is thinking about the awareness that, you know, the more you just ask yourself some of these things, does this seem logical? Would you think, would you think somebody else should do that? Like, if you told your children or your friends or people around you to go into surrender mode, would you think that was a good idea for them?
Or maybe not. Because when you stop to think about it for a moment, like if somebody is feeling lonely And of course, again, research has shown that that can be linked to type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart attack. So multiple things. I wouldn’t say to them, “Surrender.” I would say, “Transform.” Because let’s be honest, I mean, there are 8 billion people on the planet, and not only that, but a person can feel lonely in a crowded room.
So if a person can feel lonely in a crowded room, the feeling of feeling lonely isn’t just what’s going on in the world. That, you know, it, it can feel like an internal disconnect or hurt or patterns of disconnect or hurt and shut down. And I wouldn’t say surrender. I would say transform. I would say look at what’s really going on inside and make a real genuine change.
So again, just food for thought and then the insight that I want to leave you with is just exactly that. Think about what’s logical for you because that’s what I started doing and then I started reading, really realizing that a lot of things that I thought, you know, 20-plus years ago that I was reading that were going to help me to heal actually ended up backfiring in big ways, and that I needed to work with the mind in a different way, and it was pivotal.
And so just food for thought on that. And of course, by the way, if you are somebody who is wanting to understand more about mind body healing and how it works, um, and how I’ve been able to show it even under medical equipment, there is a free training in the show notes. So that is available. And as always, please do take just a quick moment to hit the share button on this episode.
You know, share it with somebody you love, somebody you care about, or somebody you don’t even know, because the more that every single person gets real results and heals themselves and changes their life and loves their life, the better this world is for all of us. And so please do take a moment to hit the share button, and please do have an incredible rest of your day.
I look forward to connecting with you on the next episode. We’ll see you there.
