Welcome to Heal Yourself, Change Your Life. My name is Brandy Gillmore, and after recovering from my own life-changing injury, it’s become my mission to share with others the same discoveries I made that changed my health and my entire life. Our minds are truly incredible. The placebo is proof of this.
Each week I will take this simple awareness to a whole new level. I’ll even coach live callers to free themselves of physical pain using only their mind, and then I’ll provide you with a combination of practical and spiritual insights that you can use to master your mind, your emotions, and your energy to help you heal your health, yourself, and your life.
Let’s begin.
Hello and happy beautiful day to you. On today’s quick IQ episode, I want to talk about overcoming burnout or even staying out of burnout and avoiding that, and getting unstuck from frustration and the spiral that happens so often with burnout or even just overwhelm.
You know, so often people will get stuck in these patterns and it becomes a cycle where they feel overwhelmed. Overwhelmed, and then they feel like they just need to relax and give themselves time to rest. And it vacillates back and forth.
And if you actually listened to last week’s podcast episode where we worked with a beautiful volunteer, Jackie, she was experiencing that very thing where she was literally going from a place of feeling overwhelmed or frustrated and being stuck in that, to then also pressure and so pressured. And then also just feeling like she needed to be able to relax and give herself time. And so those feelings were creating this spiral around her health.
Breaking the Burnout Spiral
And that’s what I want to talk to you about—exactly that. So often when people are in a place of needing to get things done, they can feel all of this pressure. But if you create a different energy with it, a flow with it, that’s ultimately when it can feel good.
Now, by the way, if we back up for a moment, if you just think about life, and we think about, sometimes what people will hear is they’ll hear, you know, we shouldn’t have to do anything fast, or we shouldn’t want to need to be doers, if you will. But the way you want to think about it is like this:
I invite you to think about it like driving a car. If you think about driving a car, we need times when we’re going slow—a school zone or a sharp corner, or just times when we’re on a slow residential street. But then we also need times when we’re going to get somewhere and we’re on a freeway and we need to be able to speed up and really get there. That’s how life is, if you will.
There are times when there are things that we really need to get done, to take care of. Maybe it’s a job, maybe it’s getting the kids to school, maybe it’s getting things done. And so we do need to have that. But then there are also times when we need to slow down and connect—connect with friends or family, or laugh and play and be present or intimate or whatnot. So we need that different speed. We need to be able to do that.
The more we can do that, the more we can be productive and live a full life, and also just also feel this connection and love and happiness and joy and really have a fulfilling life. And so when you think about it from this way, from this perspective that we want—we want to have both.
Understanding Emotional Patterns
Ultimately, what can happen sometimes is this: people will get caught in this negative cycle where they feel like they need to get something done and they’re pressuring and pressuring and pressuring themselves. And then it’s feeling overwhelmed and negativity and stress.
And then maybe inside their mind they’ll tell themselves something like this: “I shouldn’t have to do this,” or “This isn’t fair,” or “This is too much,” or “I can’t handle this.” And they’ll say all of those things: “I can’t handle this. This is too much. I shouldn’t have to do this.” And what happens is, it amplifies the negative emotions.
And so that in and of itself can help increase feelings of burnout. Because when you really stop and think about it for a moment, the truth of it is that we as human beings are capable of so much. I mean, if you think about it for a moment, if you step back and look at it, there are people who run companies that have thousands of people working for and with them—and they feel alive doing it.
And then there are people who are also stressed even ordering off the menu. You know, ordering off the menu feels overwhelming, or getting a few things done feels overwhelming. Now, what’s the difference? We’re all human beings. We’re all created equally. One difference is what’s going on in our minds.
If things feel stressful, ordering off the menu, somebody might feel like, “Oh, I can’t get that,” or “I should get that.” Confusion. Confusion. Indecision. Confusion. And so the mind is working in that way. Whereas another person may feel decisive—they can do things, they have an organized way of thinking and feeling, and an assertiveness or clarity, a mental clarity that makes everything easier.
And that’s my point—exactly that. You may want to notice in your own life: if you are feeling, if you’re working on something, are you pressuring yourself? Are you criticizing yourself? Are you telling yourself that you’re frustrated or it’s impossible or you shouldn’t have to do this or it’s too much?
If so, I’d invite you to change that. Because here’s the thing: really, if you think back to second grade, can you do more now than you could in second grade? Well, likely the answer is yes. You can do more, you can think about things in a different way, you can do more things. So what might have been overwhelming when you were four years old or when you were six or eight years old—now you can handle easily.
Expanding Your Capacity
And so that’s the point of it all also. That we as human beings are always growing. And so if we’re always growing, we want to be able to expand ourselves, right?
And for me personally, by the way, I’m going to tell you—really—you may have heard me say this before, but when I was writing my book, it was a lot. Because I also had a lot of other things going on at the same time, and I didn’t want to have to give those up. I want to do everything. Since my injury and after I healed, it’s just like, “I want to do this, I want to do this.”
So I wanted to make my book really amazing and with clarity and add so much to it. And then at the same time, there were all of these other things that I wanted to do also with my team and create. So it was just… and then family and different things, and so I felt stretched.
And I found my mind going, “Eek, this is too much!” And I was like, “Wait a second. I know better than this. Delete, delete. I’m not going to go into ‘this is too much, too much.'” Instead, I literally told myself, “Well, if I was running for president, I would be even busier. Let me just relax into this. Let me stretch.”
And the way I thought about it is like this—and by the way, not that I ever want to run for president—I was just comparing it to something that felt like it was busier at the time. But another way to think about it is like this:
Relax Into the Stretch
If you’ve ever stretched or done the splits and you stretch into something, and at first it feels like you’ve hit your max—it feels stretched, it feels like you’re at your limit—now, if you say, “Oh, this is too much, this is too much,” what do you do?
No. You relax into it. You go, “Okay, I’m just going to relax into this.” And so that’s what I did mentally. I said, “Wait a second, I’m just going to relax. It’s okay. Let me—yes, it’s fast, yes there’s a lot—and I can do this. I’m just stretching and growing. I’m just stretching. I’m just growing.”
And so that’s one thing that you want to notice about yourself: notice when you feel like there is a lot—how are you handling it? Are you pressuring yourself? Are you criticizing yourself? Are you finding yourself frustrated? Are you finding yourself angst and overwhelmed?
I would invite you to think about it as growing and just think, “Okay, let me relax into this moment. Yep, there’s a lot to do. Let me just do one thing at a time. Let me do this. Let me smile while I do it.”
Just noticing those feelings of how can you change your energy? How can you expand into it? So even on the last podcast episode we talked about even just geeking out on something—like having fun with it, blissing out, enjoying, having fun instead of getting frustrated or upset—but really just diving into it, being excited to learn something or do something.
Creating Balance Between Fast and Slow
That’s what I want to invite you to look at—is that. Now this is the other piece of it though, is this: if you’re always going fast, fast, fast, fast, fast, then your nervous system kind of gets used to that. You feel like you’ve always got to go fast, fast, fast, fast, fast.
So you want to make sure—just like we talked about the analogy of the car—you also want to make sure to give yourself time to slow down. To create that healthy balance of yes, being able to go fast and yes, being able to go slow and enjoy it.
Not slow because you are exhausted. Not slow because you just want to check out. Because some people will do exactly that—they’ll say, “Okay, I need to just slow down. Let me just watch TV and zone out.” Okay, which doesn’t necessarily always slow them down, depending upon what they watch.
But it doesn’t also take your energy and slow it down and also enjoy those moments. And so what I would invite you to do is really think about: what are slower moments that you could enjoy? Maybe it’s a massage. Maybe it’s intimate connection with a partner or people around you, but where you just slow down and have a connection and enjoy.
Or maybe it’s slowing down and just having a bath or whatever that is. But being able to be in that space also—not because you’re exhausted, not because, “Oh I’m drained and I just need to slow down,” but because you can enjoy it. Because when you can find that flow, that can keep you out of overwhelm.
Even if you just schedule like a half an hour or twenty minutes to just be in a relaxed, enjoyable time where you can just slow down and be present and enjoy—that can be very helpful too. Because again, it’s like if you’re always used to go-go-go-go-go-go-go-go-go-go—it’s just like you just program that in yourself. It’s like the only speed.
Building Versatility in Your Nervous System
And so that’s another thing that I want to invite you to look at doing—to create that healthy balance. To help your mind and help yourself. It’s like it allows you to be more present. Because if you can go from slow to fast and in between, it’s healthier for your nervous system. It’s not just stuck in one mode that is go-go-go-go-go.
And so that’s the invitation that I want to invite you to look at—is exactly that. Just kind of bringing it all together: two things.
- Notice—how’s your mind when you are going fast? Is it in a negative place or is it, “I can do this, I can do this. I’ve got this. I’m going to flow. I’m going to geek out or be energized or have fun or feel amazing. I can do this!” Or even if it’s a lot going on, saying, “Okay, I’m just stretching. I’m leaning into this. I can do this.” Like that feeling of feeling good about it. So making a point to do exactly that.
- Then also, the second insight is just noticing: are you giving yourself time to go different speeds? So you’re not just locked into one speed. Because what you want to remember is just like AI—our patterns breed more of the same. When we get locked into one speed, it’s like we feel like we always need to go that speed.
So the more we have versatility, the more we can have presence and really show up in life and be more present, but also not just be programmed to be one speed—but be able to be both.
And as we even slow down, slowing down also brings a great energy—not from necessarily exhaustion—but how can you slow down and enjoy the moment?
So those are the two insights that I want to invite you to explore in your life today.
