Most people think of meditation as something that is calming, healthy, spiritual, and beneficial.
Brandy did too.
In fact, she absolutely loved meditation. She practiced it for years…several times a day..and describes it as feeling peaceful, euphoric, spiritual, and incredible.
But around 2008–2009, something unexpected began happening.
At first, she didn’t even realize what was going on.
And when she eventually recognized what her mind was doing, it raised a surprising question:
How could something that felt so good also be affecting her mind in a way she hadn’t recognized?
That experience ultimately changed the way Brandy began working with her mind.
And in the years since, research examining meditation-related adverse effects has continued to grow.
For example, researchers at Brown University have specifically studied meditation-related adverse effects and the challenges involved in recognizing and accurately measuring them.
[Read the Brown University research here]
In this episode, Brandy shares:
• What unexpectedly began happening after years of meditation
• Why she didn’t recognize it at first
• Why repeated mental practices may affect the mind in ways we don’t immediately notice
• What growing research is examining regarding meditation-related adverse effects
• One important thing to pay attention to if meditation is part of your regular practice
• Why Brandy ultimately began working with her mind in a very different way
This is not about saying meditation is good or bad—or telling you whether you should or shouldn’t meditate.
It’s about becoming more aware of what your mind is actually doing.
Because something can feel beneficial in one way while there may also be another effect occurring that isn’t immediately obvious.
And the more we understand the mind, the more intentionally we can work with it to create greater clarity, presence, happiness, healing, and transformation.
If meditation is part of your life, this is one episode you’ll definitely want to hear.

Welcome to Heal Yourself. Change Your Life. I’m Brandy Gillmore, and what I’m most known for is helping people to create radical transformations and even demonstrating the power of the mind and self-healing under medical equipment so you can see the results. And my work has even been published in a medical journal because it’s truly incredible what we are all capable of when we understand our own minds at a deeper level.
So whether you’re new to this work or you’ve been studying the power of the mind for many years, I love that you are here. I love that we’re on this incredible journey together, and I look forward to sharing breakthrough information with you. That said, on this podcast, I’ll share two types of episodes.
First, self-healing episodes where I share key insights from working with live volunteers. And the second type are where I answer questions from the audience. That said, if you’d like to volunteer or submit a question, come visit me at BrandyGillmore.com. On that note, let’s dive in.
So I used to meditate a lot, and then something really fascinating started happening, and it was this: my mind started going into meditative states automatically, and not in a good way. And at first, I didn’t even realize it was happening. Now, you might think, “Wait a second, how did you not realize it was happening?”
And the best way to think about it is like this. Have you ever done this before where you’ve maybe driven a car to a destination that you’re used to going, and you get to your destination, and you stop and think, “Oh my gosh, did I stop at all of the lights or all of the stop signs?” Because your mind automatically checked out, and the only reason that you really actually know that that happened is because you’re in a different destination, and you don’t recall necessarily the drive.
And because what happens is anything we do repeatedly, our minds can start doing automatically. Like, you know, when we write our name, you don’t even think about it anymore if you’ve done it a lot, or even typing, you can not really need to think about it if you’re really used to doing it, or even tying your shoes.
You know, at first as a kid, you have your, you know, your bunny ears and you learn to tie it, but then after a while, it’s like your hands do it automatically. And so what happens is that anything that we do with our minds, and we do it repeatedly, repeatedly, it can start to do it automatically. And so in my own life, I had been meditating for years and years and years and years and years, and my brain started just checking out, and I didn’t realize it was happening until I started just noticing there was like glitches in time.
And so I started actually paying attention to it, and I started realizing what w- my mind was doing. Now, the reason that I’m sharing this is because when you stop and think about it, this is how our minds work. Anything that we do repeatedly, our minds can check out. You know, when you first are a kid and you learn how to do the dishes, it takes some focus, or you’re driving a car, anything, you know?
When you’re doing it at first- It takes conscious effort, but if you, after a while, you do it so much, your mind can just do it automatically. And so my point is, is that now that I’m seeing more and more and more people meditate… You know, when I meditated, it was 20 years ago, 15 years ago, and then I stopped because I started realizing what my mind was doing, and I started working with my mind in a different way because it, of course, scared me.
I realized the more I started really observing and noticing what my mind was doing, the more I realized I needed to really get present and focused. And so I started actually instead doing exercises to get myself present, and instead of just meditating to create a different mindset shift, I started instead really working on changing my emotions and my mindset and my energy towards life itself.
So basically, I kind of said, “Okay, well, instead of checking out, let me check in, and let me get really grounded and really present.” And so in doing so, not only was I able to heal myself, but I also was able to kind of get back in my body, so to speak. Now, a lot of times when people approach meditation, and of course, I’m not saying don’t meditate.
May- maybe that’s right for you And so we’re all different and, and, and whatnot, but what I am saying is that we’re all the same in that when you do something over and over and over and over and over repeatedly, if you do it the same way over and over and over again, our brains can learn it. That’s how the brain works.
And so a lot of people, though, think that when they meditate that meditation has no side effects to it. Now, you might be surprised, there are a lot of studies and growing studies that are showing that there are MRAE, which are meditative-related adverse effects. Now, that’s actually quite common that people can have a variety of different effects, now, ad- adverse reactions.
Now, most people don’t even realize it’s happening because they don’t chalk it up to meditation, and so even in my own situation, I didn’t realize my brain was checking out, and that was a whole nother thing. But I’ll see people who are experiencing different fear or anxiety or a variety of different things because they’ve been working with their mind in a, in a specific way.
Now, of course, again, I’m not saying don’t meditate. I’m not saying do meditate. I’m just saying be aware of what your mind is doing because I see more and more and more people working with the mind, and I see more and more people unaware of maybe the effects that it’s having, and so we just want to really understand it and be very consciously aware of it.
And of course, you don’t wanna be afraid of your mind. You wanna be able to do it. It’s kinda like this, driving. There… When you’re driving a car, there are cert- certain safety precautions, if you will. You know, you wear a seatbelt, you pay attention, all of the things. And so would I not wanna drive? No, of course I wanna drive, right?
Driving a car gives me freedom to go and do and be, but I also know that there are awarenesses to pay attention to. And so all I’m saying in this case is just because I see such a growing number of people who are experiencing things, and they’re not even aware of it until they start noticing what their mind is doing.
And so just food for thought. And by the way, if you are somebody who does maybe a silent meditation or whatnot repeatedly over and over and over and over in the same way, you may wanna change it up more. You know? So, so food for thought. Do what you feel like is best for you, but all I’m saying is, is just I’m seeing a growing amount.
And, and, and so to me, in my life and what I’ve seen with people and, and working with people to create radical changes, a lot of times getting very present but also reprogramming the mind to what’s going on in life and really creating that reprogramming Has been a bigger key. And the way to think about it is like this.
Like, this is what I did with my mind to open up my abilities, to heal with my, uh, to, to heal myself, to be able to channel information and open up my intuition and all of these things. What I did with my mind is this, is instead of just meditating, I worked on rewiring my mind to basically to rewire what was really going on at a deeper level.
Now, the simple way to picture it is like this, is that imagine if you walk into a house, and you walk into your house, and there’s a ton of, you know, different radio stations or different televisions playing, and some of them have televisions that you, you know, television stations that you do like, and some of them you don’t like.
Now, a lot of times what people do is they’re trying to quiet the mind and just be quiet and silence and block all of that out and quiet the mind. But instead, what I did is I got very, very specific and I said, “Okay, which ones are making the chatter that I don’t like? Let me identify it and shut it off.
And then let me find the ones that are great or I do want, and let me program those in.” And so instead what happens is then it, it’s like walking into a house where you feel like it’s great music playing, right? It’s a happiness that’s flowing, that your mind is just programmed to feel that way, to be that way, and it creates the feeling of happiness and health and, and also a clear mind to where you really feel that presence and you feel that clarity.
So now, as far as meditation, I don’t really want to check out. Like, my mind is so clear, and it’s also opened up this intuition that I don’t have to try to check out to get intuition. It’s, it’s here. It’s present. And so again, whatever works best for you, but just food for thought just because so many people I see are increasing side effects from meditation, and they don’t even realize.
Like, as soon as I say side effects of meditation, a lot of people go, “Huh? What? That’s impossible.” But if you start looking, there’s a growing amount of research. And so I experienced these side effects back in like 2008, 2009. So like many years ago and, and so almost 18 years ago now. And, uh, so at that point, that’s when I said, “Okay, let me, let me change this.”
And as I did, that’s when I was able to figure out how to heal myself and to create all this change in my life. But my point is, is even since then I’ve been concerned about it. And just in the recent last years you start seeing more and more and more people seeing the adverse effects. And, and so a- again, it’s, it…
just to pay attention. And, and again, it’s not like, oh, we need to not do it or do it or whatever. It’s, uh, with anything. If you go skiing there can be precautions. If you, uh, play football or soccer or pickleball, there can be precautions of things you pay attention to. And so it’s just that awareness, and if it comes down to simplicity and logic even.
You know, in my life I loved meditation. I thought it was fantastic and wonderful and life-changing and absolutely incredible. Like I loved it. I thought it was, it- I felt wonderful and euphoric and all of these things. And so I thought it was great, and I thought it was very spiritual and great and all of these things until I started realizing what was happening that I hadn’t realized previously.
And so, so, so my point is just on that note that if you are somebody who’s doing the same type of meditation repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly, just bringing it down to logic and think about how the brain works. And anything we do repeatedly- Our brains, even driving a car, which I’m not recommending to drive a car on autopilot, just saying, our brains can check out and start doing things automatically.
And I’m just seeing this more, and more, and more. And so I just wanna, kinda, warn people like, “Hey, like, let’s pay attention.” Uh, because honestly, it is truly incredible what we are capable of. I see people heal themselves, change their lives, change their love, their connection, their relationship, their…
There’s so many things. It’s absolutely incredible what we’re capable of when we understand the mind. And of course, the goal is to understand the mind because programming it, just like programming a computer, the more you know how to program a computer correctly, fantastic. But if you get in with the programming and you start moving things around and don’t know what you’re doing, it might not go as well.
So, the more that every single person can know how the mind works, I think that that’s ultimately where we wanna be, is just understand it. And of course, bring it down to logic and think about what to do with the mind and what not to do with the mind and, and kind of understand it from that mindset, because that’s what has helped me to create radical results in my life, is understanding that, bringing it down to logic, and seeing what works.
And so that’s been pivotal. And so on that note, uh, that’s the insight that I want to share with you. And of course, even just simply walking around and being more present, but also identifying. Like, you know, so often people say something like their mind won’t stop running, so they’re… I’ve seen people who are, you know, maybe turning on a TV to get it to stop or, or checking out with meditation or whatnot.
But if we identify what it is, what that pattern is, and really shift it, it’s like, ah, it’s liberating. And so what I would say is, is if your mind is running a lot of chatter, notice what the patterns are, notice what the programming is, and then really work on rewiring that because it’s, it’s incredible what we’re capable of.
So just food for thought on that note. And, uh, and by the way, if you are somebody who is working on self-healing and healing yourself, uh, there is a link in the show notes. If you’d like a free training on understanding more of the logic behind that, how it works, and how I’ve been able to get results even under medical equipment, so you can see the power of the mind.
So that is available. And as always, I want to ask you, please do take just a quick moment to hit the share button on this episode. You know, share it with somebody you love, somebody you care about, or somebody you don’t even know, because the more that every single person in our world feels happy, and healthy, and loved, and loving, truly the better this world is for all of us.
And so please do take a quick moment to hit the share button, and please do make a point to have an incredible rest of your day. I look forward to connecting with you on the next episode. We’ll see you there.
